The authors, one the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University, and the other the former ambassador to South Africa, discuss how their friendship, predicated on their discussions about their different religious beliefs, is an important example for how inter-religious understanding can be fostered in the current environment of religious misunderstanding and mistrust. Their friendship and expanding dialogue allows them to understand each other's worldview and recognize their similarities and common philosophical and ethical positions.
