Language study and study abroad have been the two most common ways for American students to enhance their cross-cultural competency. But are there other ways to enhance this competency? And are these even the two most effective ways? The limits of academic language training and study abroad are discussed, while the importance of being interculturally competent is emphasized. A number of thought-provoking proposals are put forward and examined in order to further the discussion of the topic.
