The author expresses serious concern for the rise in computer based training (CBT) for expatriates preparing to work and live abroad. While CBT is an affordable option for cross-cultural training, it is a one-sided method that is inadequate because CBT provides only culture-specific information. Inadequate training can result in high monetary and non-monetary costs of failed expatriate assignments, which are also harmful to intercultural relations. The author argues that cross-cultural training should take on a more holistic approach, combining information that is both culture general and culture specific. The author believes that CBT is a powerful tool and that it should be incorporated into a holistic model for achieving effective cross-cultural communication skills. |
