The need for cultural sensitivity and awareness is apparent on the macro and micro level, in the domestic US and in Americans' relations with other cultures and nations. The author, a newscaster and reporter for National Public Radio, became aware of this need early on in his career, when he worked at a bilingual radio and TV station in Alaska. The need to understand and appreciate another culture's values was made evident during the author's time in Alaska , and is just as pressing today with the US involved in military and rhetorical conflicts in the Middle East.
