Today is a time when America's ability to “win the hearts and minds” of others is questioned as never before. Yet one of America 's best assets in this battle are her citizen diplomats. Citizen diplomacy is the notion that in a vibrant democracy, the individual citizen has the right- even the responsibility- to help shape US foreign relations one handshake at a time. The authors discuss two organizations, the National Council for International Visitors and the International Thanksgiving Fellowship Program- as two nonprofit organizations that successfully promote effective citizen diplomacy and expand opportunities for Americans to practice citizen diplomacy.
