The author examines the role of people who work in America through H-1B visas. These workers often play critical roles in highly skilled sectors of the economy, including niches in software development, database management, and engineering. The author traces the pre-2001 issues faced by these workers- primarily dealing with management and mobility- and contrasts them with the post-2001 issues faced by these workers because of the effects of 9/11 and an economy in recession. These issues include dealing with being laid off, immigration procedures, and the competitiveness of the international marketplace.
