Eighty percent of human resource executives polled said that global experience is more of a must for advancement in large corporations. Statistics show, however, that not only are there misperceptions about the willingness of women to be posted abroad, but that women in middle management are less likely to be posted abroad. The author argues that the end result is a global glass ceiling. She finds that issues complicating postings overseas for women include the balance of work and personal priorities, such as children. Despite the emphasis on overseas training and postings, many expatriates, both male and female, find that companies do not handle their re-entry to the country or home office well.
