The author advocates a new approach to teaching English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL), which he terms the Sentences Per Minute (SPM) approach. Rather than focusing on the rote repetition of grammatical and syntactic nuances, the SPM approach focuses on developing the real world, practicable spoken proficiency of a speaker. In making this argument, the author challenges many of the ESL/EFL field's underlying normative assumptions and past practices. He argues that this is essential given the changing nature of English communication proficiency in a world where the nature and form of English is increasingly determined by the cultural context.
