The author discusses the discrimination and misunderstanding directed towards Arabs, Muslims, and Arab-Americans in the aftermath of 9/11. Common misconceptions about Muslims and Arabs are addressed, as are the reasons why Americans may be prone to prejudice against Arabs and associate terrorist activity with them while being less cognizant of ‘homegrown', white terrorists like Timothy McVeigh. The role that the mass media and popular culture play in this discrepancy is highlighted.
