As the globalization and expansion of professional postings grows worldwide, there is an increasing challenge in finding suitable candidates to fill these positions. The author acknowledges that much of the difficulty arises from selection processes failing to find applicants that are not only qualified but also willing to go overseas. The author advocates the importance of cross-cultural training before going overseas as well as mentorship by former expatriates, but finds that these resources often are not utilized. Once expatriates are at their destination, they find their support services and company support to be minimal. The author's solution is to facilitate better communication between the home firm and the expatriate. The author argues that IHR managers play an essential role in the placement and management of the international workforce and must institute better methods of communication in order to fully utilize the workforce and the contributions expatriates can continue to make to the workforce once they return home.
