This session will use the personal travel experiences of participants to elucidate the factors underlying mission success—either personal or organizational—during foreign travel. Instead of lamenting the seeming lack of interest or preparation for a cross-cultural experience, a range of competencies will be brought to bear on analyzing- and predicting—the successful expatriations. It’s not just intercultural competence, language fluency, security awareness, interpersonal skills or emotional intelligence—it is all of these things and more. Whether traveling as a student, tourist, business person, aid worker, diplomat, or warrior, this new approach will help increase the likelihood that the outcome of the voyage will better match the aspirations that prompted the travel. |
